Under the leadership of Chancellor David Ward, the university has given increased emphasis to strategic planning. In 1998, Chancellor Ward introduced the Madison Initiative, a four-year plan to combine public and private funding in response to a rapidly changing environment and eroding financial support for higher education.

As highlighted in this report, the Madison Initiative is providing the framework for innovative approaches and dynamic programs that benefit students and the state. Continued support for the initiative – now at its halfway point – will help the university maintain a margin of excellence.
