The Madison Initiative

The Madison Initiative is a four-year plan that calls upon public and private funding to support priority areas at UW-Madison. During the plan's first phase, included in the state's biennial budget for 1999-2001, significant progress is being made with strategic hiring of faculty in emerging areas of knowledge; academic improvements, such as more student research opportunities and new computer programs to help students understand the cultural nuances of foreign languages; additional financial aid to offset tuition increases; and facilities upgrades for some of the university's older buildings.

The second phase of the Madison Initiative, proposed for the 2001-2003 biennial budget, would allow the advancement of creative pilot programs. The following pages highlight examples of programs in the second phase's four priority areas:
